TIPS AND ACTIVITIES FOR PARENTS FROM THE
OHIO STANDARDS BOOKLET FOR KINDERGARTEN

1. Pick a story that has repeated phrases. Your child will learn the
repeated phrase and have fun joining in with you each time it
appears in the story.
2. Encourage family members and friends to give books to your
child as presents for birthdays and other occasions.
3. Teach your child the names of objects in stores.
4. Introduce new words when you share a conversation with your
child over meal times or other times.
5. As you read a story or poem, ask your child to listen for and say
the words that begin with the same sound. Then have him or her
say another word that begins with the sound.
6. Read aloud to your child everyday for at least fifteen minutes.
